Trent Alexander-Arnold: Liverpool's Dynamic Force on the Verge of Evolution
Trent Alexander-Arnold's journey with Liverpool has been nothing short of extraordinary. Since his debut in 2016, the 25-year-old has made 310 appearances, becoming a cornerstone of Jurgen Klopp’s side. As he prepares for Liverpool's 2024-25 campaign, his role and contributions continue to evolve, reflecting the broader changes in football tactics and formations.
A versatile player, Alexander-Arnold has predominantly excelled as a right-back. Yet, his capabilities have seen him venture into midfield, especially for the England national team. Remarkably, he has played in midfield in six of his last seven starts for England, showcasing his adaptability. Tim Jenkins, a former analyst and assistant coach for Liverpool Under-21s, recalls, "He'd played in midfield in Pep Lijnders' Under-16s, at the base of the diamond. He was right in the middle of the pitch and involved in everything."
Alexander-Arnold's development into a multifaceted player began early. Before transitioning to the Under-16s, he played as a centre-half and a full-back under Michael Beale in the Under-15s. "I remember he had a real purple patch after he'd done pre-season with the first team then came back to play with the Under-21s," Jenkins reflects. These positions laid the groundwork for his current role, where he seamlessly shifts from defense to midfield, embodying the modern footballer's versatility.
The numbers back up his incredible influence on the pitch. In the 2018-19 season, Alexander-Arnold recorded the third-highest tally of assists in the Premier League with 12. He outdid himself the following season with 13 assists, second only to Kevin de Bruyne. His creative prowess continued into the 2021-22 campaign, where his 12 assists were bettered only by Mohamed Salah. Last season, his average of 5.25 shot-creating actions per 90 minutes ranked in the 99th percentile among full-backs in Europe’s top five leagues.
Jason McAteer, a former Liverpool player, notes the evolution of the role Alexander-Arnold now embodies. "Today's full-back is a lot more like a wing-back. You've got to get forward. You've got to get balls into the box. And you have this hybrid role where you come into midfield." This quote encapsulates the changing dynamics of modern football and how Alexander-Arnold exemplifies these transformations.
The strategic flexibility Alexander-Arnold offers Liverpool is invaluable. Slotting into various formations, whether it’s a 4-3-3 or 4-2-1-3, his ability to progress from full-back to midfield adds a technical and tactical depth to the squad. Jenkins believes his hybrid role—where he functions as a full-back in defense and transitions to a midfielder in attack—maximizes his diverse skill set. "Trent has got that many attributes that you've got to get him into the team," he says. "Trent has had an ideal skillset to adapt to how the game has changed."
Despite his offensive brilliance, some critics highlight his defensive vulnerabilities. McAteer contends, "Trent's weakest attribute is his defending and he was playing as a deep-lying midfielder. He was great on the ball, but without it he was exposed and he became a bit of a scapegoat." However, Alexander-Arnold has shown resilience by continually adapting his game. "His qualities are there to be seen, but you can be exposed. Time and space are your best mates in football. If you're not given that by the player alongside you, defending and taking players away, you're not going to flourish," McAteer adds.
Looking ahead, Alexander-Arnold’s future remains a topic of speculation. With his contract expiring in the summer and rumors linking him to Real Madrid, Liverpool fans are keenly watching his every move. His absence from Liverpool's recent tour of America further fueled the rumors, though he started the final pre-season friendly against Sevilla at right-back, indicating his ongoing commitment to the club.
As he gears up for another season, Alexander-Arnold continues to embody the spirit of adaptation and growth. Klopp often remarks on his flexibility, stating, "Sometimes Trent will be on the outside, sometimes he'll be on the inside – wherever he is, he’s just going to be Trent." This sentiment captures the essence of Alexander-Arnold's journey—a player who has continuously evolved, meeting the demands of modern football while staying true to his unique skill set.
As Liverpool fans anticipate another thrilling season, one thing is certain: Trent Alexander-Arnold will remain a pivotal figure, driving the team forward with his unparalleled vision, passing, and adaptability.
