Jessica Campbell Shatters NHL Coaching Barrier with Seattle Kraken Appointment
Jessica Campbell has etched her name into the annals of hockey history by becoming the first woman to serve as a full-time coach in the National Hockey League (NHL). The Seattle Kraken announced Campbell’s appointment to their coaching staff, marking a significant milestone for gender representation in professional hockey.
A Trailblazing Journey
Campbell's coaching journey has been nothing short of pioneering. She first gained recognition during the 2014-15 season, when she captained the first-ever Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL) All-Star Game. Her coaching career began to flourish as she entered the ranks of the American Hockey League (AHL) in 2022, becoming the first woman to coach in the league. As an assistant coach with the Coachella Valley Firebirds, she managed the team’s power play and played a crucial role in player development.
Proven Success in AHL
Campbell's impact was immediately felt at Coachella Valley, particularly in her mentorship of Tye Kartye. Under her guidance, Kartye was awarded the 2023 AHL Dudley "Red" Garrett Award for the most outstanding rookie. Kartye’s performance, with 20 points (11 goals, 9 assists) over 77 games, underscored Campbell’s capabilities as a developmental coach.
Kraken coach Dan Bylsma lauded her dedication, stating, "During our tenure in Coachella Valley, I saw firsthand Jessica's commitment to player development. Her ability to establish relationships with her players, specifically Tye Kartye, Shane Wright, and Ryker Evans, was an important factor in this hire. I'm looking forward to continuing to work with her at the NHL level.”
Breaking Boundaries in International Hockey
Campbell's influence extends beyond the AHL. In 2021, she served in coaching roles with the Nurnberg Ice Tigers. Her groundbreaking achievements continued in 2022 when she became the first woman to coach a men’s national team during the IIHF Men’s World Championship with Team Germany. Her roster included notable athletes like Kraken goaltender Philipp Grubauer, further showcasing her versatility and expertise in coaching.
Focusing on Player Development
With her appointment to the Kraken, Campbell continues to emphasize her philosophy of fostering a growth mindset. "I just focused on the task at hand in coaching, but absolutely, it's obviously a tremendous opportunity and I'm honored to be where I am and to be -- it's a humbling feeling to be a part of the Kraken organization,” she said. “For me, that's what it's about. Just putting my head down and doing the work. You know, where it takes me it takes me, but I'm obviously honored to be on this path and continue to just do the good work that it takes to hopefully reach that goal.”
Campbell’s reputation as a power-skating coach is well-regarded, having worked with elite athletes such as Natalie Spooner and Joel Edmundson. Her expertise in this area suggests she will likely head the Kraken’s power play, bringing her strategic insights to the NHL stage.
A New Era for the Kraken
The Seattle Kraken's recent signing of the 2024 Stanley Cup champion Brandon Montour signals the organization’s ambitions for the upcoming season. Campbell’s appointment aligns with these aspirations, bringing a fresh perspective to the coaching staff and further bolstering the team’s developmental program.
A Pioneering Spirit
Looking at her journey, Campbell remains focused and grounded. "I'm a big believer in just keeping a growth mindset every day. Obviously, my goal is to continue to coach at the highest level, but timelines aren't necessary for me and definitely not where my focus is," she shared.
Jessica Campbell’s career thus far is a testament to her unwavering dedication and exceptional skill. Her role with the Seattle Kraken not only breaks new ground in the NHL but also serves as an inspiration for future generations of women in hockey. As she steps into this historic position, all eyes will be on how her expertise and innovative approach help propel the Kraken to new heights.
