Veterans from the 2008 NFL Draft
Joe Flacco, Josh Johnson, and Calais Campbell continue to play actively in the NFL, showcasing their talents and enduring commitment to the game.
Joe Flacco: The Comeback Kid
In a remarkable turn of events, Joe Flacco has been named the 2023 NFL Comeback Player of the Year. Flacco, who plays quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts, has demonstrated resilience and an unyielding spirit throughout his career. This accolade not only highlights his determination but also serves as a testament to his skill and adaptability on the field.
Josh Johnson: A Steady Hand in Baltimore
Josh Johnson has solidified his role as the quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens. Throughout his career, Johnson has played for multiple teams, earning a reputation for his reliability and experience. His steady presence in Baltimore is a significant asset as the Ravens continue to strive for success.
Calais Campbell: A Veteran for the Dolphins
Calais Campbell, a distinguished defensive tackle, currently plays for the Miami Dolphins. Known for his formidable presence on the field, Campbell boasts six Pro Bowl appearances and was included in the 2010s All-Decade team. His 2023 season with the Atlanta Falcons was particularly productive, seeing him start all 17 games, record 6.5 sacks, 56 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and 42 quarterback pressures.
The Decision to Continue
At the end of the 2023 season, Campbell contemplated retirement. A key factor in his decision to continue playing was his profound love for the game. "I thought about [retiring]," he admits. "It really came down to just with the family, talking to the wife and kids. Because physically, and the desire and love for the game, has never left, not even a little bit." Campbell acknowledges that his game has evolved with age, emphasizing the importance of strength and finesse. "I have to learn how to use other parts of my game, bring a lot more of the strength part but I still have enough finesse and everything else, I got a full box of little tools," he explains.
A New Opportunity with the Dolphins
Joining the Miami Dolphins represents a new chapter in Campbell's career, one fueled by his ambition to win a Super Bowl ring. The Dolphins' roster, boasting six Pro Bowl players, coupled with the addition of new talent, offers a promising opportunity. "I feel like there's a really good opportunity here. Very talented team all over the field, both offense and defense," Campbell says. He believes that team chemistry will be crucial to their success. "When you go through the roster and who you have, I just see so many people that I feel like we can really play together and really build that team chemistry you need and be a force to reckon with."
Reuniting with Anthony Weaver
Another significant factor in Campbell's decision was the chance to reunite with coach Anthony Weaver. Weaver, who served as Campbellās position coach for two seasons, is someone Campbell highly respects and trusts. "The main reason I wanted to come here was because I really believe in who Anthony Weaver is as a coach and our relationship," Campbell notes. Their mutual understanding and Weaver's insight into Campbell's capabilities create an environment in which Campbell can thrive. "We talked a lot during the process, and he knows what I'm capable of doing. He understands my mind and how I see the game, and he trusts it," Campbell explains.
The Pursuit of the Vince Lombardi Trophy
Ultimately, Campbell's goal is singular: to win the Super Bowl. Despite an illustrious career, a Super Bowl title has eluded him. He came close in Super Bowl XLIII with the Arizona Cardinals, but the ultimate prize remains just out of reach. "But what keeps me going though is a love for the game," Campbell says. His enduring passion for football, coupled with the promising prospects of the Dolphins, fuels his drive for the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Calais Campbell's journey in the NFL exemplifies perseverance, adaptability, and an unwavering love for the game. As he embarks on this new chapter with the Miami Dolphins, his experience and determination could be the catalyst that propels the team toward their Super Bowl ambitions.
