Previously, Judon had been actively involved in the initial four practice sessions, making his sudden passivity all the more notable. At the start of the session, Judon was present and engaged but eventually withdrew from participation, sitting passively on a trash barrel and merely observing drills. This marked deviation from his usual involvement sent ripples through the practice field.
Coach Jerod Mayo, along with Eliot Wolf, the executive vice president of player personnel, was seen discussing with Judon on the field. Later, the conversation extended to include Matt Groh, the director of player personnel. Despite these conversations, Judon's demeanor indicated a deeper-rooted issue, one that may be tied to his contract situation.
Judon is currently in the last year of his contract, which offers him a base salary of $6.5 million. Reflecting on the broader context, Judon’s contract has been a point of contention before. Addressing his situation, Judon expressed his dissatisfaction. "I love football. I don't love the business of football. I don't want to be the villain. I don't want to be the bad guy. But it's like 'Shoot, help me out. We got the most cap [space] in the league right now,'" Judon mentioned on the "Shut Up Marc" podcast. His words reveal a football player caught between his passion for the sport and the frustrating realities of contract negotiations.
Judon also shared his feelings at the Patriots training camp, saying, "Honestly, it's tough going into the last year of the deal. You kind of look at everybody around the league and in the building, and you see them getting deals done and worked out, and it's tough to not be envious or jealous and stuff like that."
While he acknowledged feeling happy for his teammates securing their deals, Judon pointed out the stark disparity in his situation. "But I have to focus on myself. I'm happy for those guys. As much as everybody wants to see me stay around here for a long time, it's really not up to me. You have to ask those guys who are making those decisions," he reflected.
Fielding further inquiries, Judon reiterated his conflict between professional responsibilities and personal frustrations. "You kind of keep throwing tantrums, tantrums, tantrums—and then you don't come out there and do what you're supposed to do—it kind of gets old real fast. I ain't really trying to do that," he stated in an interview with WZLX in Boston.
Despite the turmoil, Judon made it clear that he does not intend to resort to extreme measures like holding out. "I ain't worried about holding out, sitting out, or sitting in, kind of protesting. I'm just going to come out here and kind of play because last year, that stuff was trash. I ain't really like that," he added in the same WZLX interview.
