Jason Wright, a transformative figure for the Washington Commanders, will step down from his role at the end of the 2024 season. Wright, who began his tenure with the team in 2020 when it was known as the Washington Football Team, has overseen numerous changes, including a rebranding to the Washington Commanders in 2022 and a pivotal ownership transition from Dan Snyder to Josh Harris.
Wright will not be leaving the organization entirely; instead, he will assume a new role as a senior adviser. His primary focus will be ensuring the successful completion of the Commanders' new stadium deal. “Given all those accomplishments, that's why I am proud to announce I will remain with the team throughout the 2024-2025 season, with the same responsibilities. In particular, I look forward to helping the organization complete its new stadium deal," Wright stated.
A Legacy of Transformation
Appointed as the first Black president of an NFL team, Wright has also been only the fourth former player to hold the position of president in league history. His leadership came during a period of significant upheaval and transformation for the Commanders. Reflecting on his tenure, Wright noted, "I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished over the past four years. Together with an amazing team of professionals, we have taken this franchise through a period of immense challenge and uncertainty and have transformed it.”
Wright’s tenure has been marked by concerted efforts to re-engage the fan base, improve the fan experience, and build stronger relationships with corporate partners. "We've set the table for an incredibly bright future under Josh's leadership. Over just the past year, we've welcomed record numbers of fans back into our building, made meaningful improvements to the fan experience, re-engaged with corporate partners, and reconnected with the community. Most importantly, we re-established a culture of respect in this organization," he added.
Looking Ahead
While Wright will be transitioning out of his current role, his contributions to the Commanders are set to leave a lasting impact. "This feels like the right moment for me to explore my next leadership opportunity," Wright expressed. "I'm extremely grateful to my Commanders colleagues, our fans, and this community for all that we have accomplished these past four years, and am looking forward to the start of a very successful season for the Burgundy and Gold."
In addition to his ongoing advisory role with the Commanders, Wright is a finalist for the position of president with the Green Bay Packers. This potential shift could further cement his legacy in the National Football League, showcasing his ability to lead and transform teams through periods of change.
The Commanders' journey under Wright's leadership has been a distinctive chapter in the franchise's storied history. From navigating a rebranding process and an ownership change to re-establishing a connection with the community and fans, Wright has left an indelible mark. His focus on respect, engagement, and strategic development has set the organization on a path toward sustained success and growth.
As Jason Wright prepares for his next endeavor, the Commanders, their fans, and the wider NFL community will undoubtedly look back on his tenure as a pivotal period of transformation and achievement.
