The Philadelphia Eagles have bolstered their offensive line by signing Mekhi Becton, originally intended to function as a swing tackle behind starters Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson. This move comes as the Eagles react to an unfortunate injury sustained by Tyler Steen, who suffered an ankle injury that left a gap at the right guard position.
Mekhi Becton Steps Up
Mekhi Becton seized his opportunity during his first practice with the first team, lining up as the right guard and making an immediate impact by neutralizing defensive standout Jalen Carter in 11-on-11 drills. Despite missing the initial days of training camp, Becton utilized that time wisely, staying engaged and learning from his teammates.
"The first few days he wasn't practicing, but he was definitely in my ear the whole time and telling me what I was doing wrong. He's been a great help," Becton remarked on his early days with the team.
Coach's Confidence
Eagles coach Nick Sirianni expressed optimism about Becton's progress and potential contributions. "I'm looking forward to that. Mekhi has had a good camp so far and looking forward to getting him some work next to Lane [Johnson] and continuing to work forward with that," Sirianni stated.
Team's Versatile Asset
Landon Dickerson, the Eagles' left guard, spoke highly of Becton's ability to adapt to various positions along the offensive line. "I think Mekhi is doing great. He's had to bounce around a few positions. We had some guys get banged up. Nothing different than what happens during the season, right?" said Dickerson, highlighting the challenges that come with an NFL season.
Dickerson further emphasized the value Becton brings to the team. "We have a guy that can swing at both guard and tackle, can play both guard spots. That's a lot of value in the NFL. He's able to play four out of five positions," he added, underscoring Becton's versatility and importance as a lineman.
Determined and Ready
Becton himself is clear about his readiness and willingness to step up whenever needed. "I don't have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready. If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready," Becton asserted confidently.
The Eagles have not disclosed the expected duration of Tyler Steen's absence, but Becton's presence provides at least some reassurance. Off the field, Becton remains a valuable component of the Eagles' second-team offensive line, prepared to fill in as necessary and contribute to the team's efforts this season.
As the Eagles navigate the complexities of a physically demanding NFL season, the addition of Mekhi Becton to their roster suggests a strategic move to maintain depth and flexibility within their offensive line. His adaptability, coupled with his evident skill and readiness, could prove crucial as the team moves forward.
