It's been an offseason of considerable change for the Dallas Cowboys defensive line. Amid significant departures, team owner and general manager Jerry Jones has acted swiftly to replenish and bolster the defensive front. The team faced substantial losses, with edge rushers Dorance Armstrong Jr. and Dante Fowler Jr., defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins, and interior defensive lineman Neville Gallimore all signing with other NFL teams.
The Cowboys felt a notable impact from the departures of Armstrong and Fowler, both of whom took their talents to the Washington Commanders. Meanwhile, Hankins moved on to the Seattle Seahawks, and Gallimore found a new home with the Miami Dolphins.
Strategic Acquisitions
In response to these exits, Jerry Jones orchestrated a series of decisive moves. On August 15, Jones executed a trade with the New York Giants, exchanging a 2026 sixth-round pick for veteran defensive tackle Jordan Phillips and a future seventh-round pick. This strategic addition was quickly complemented by the signing of veteran free-agent edge rusher Carl Lawson.
The most substantial acquisition came with the signing of 14-year NFL veteran defensive tackle Linval Joseph. Joseph brings a wealth of experience to the Cowboys, having played for the New York Giants, Minnesota Vikings, Los Angeles Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles, and Buffalo Bills. At 35 years old, standing 6-foot-4, and weighing 329 pounds, Joseph's physical presence is undeniably formidable.
An Experienced Leader
Joseph's NFL journey began when he was selected in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. Over his career, he has racked up impressive statistics, including 26.5 sacks, eight forced fumbles, 57 tackles for loss, and 676 total tackles in 186 career games, including 170 starts. His standout performances earned him Pro Bowl selections in 2016 and 2017 while with the Minnesota Vikings.
Furthermore, Joseph has a Super Bowl ring to his name, having been part of the Giants' championship-winning squad in his second NFL season in 2011.
A Role Beyond the Field
This offseason, Joseph signed a one-year deal with the Cowboys that includes $2.5 million guaranteed and can go up to $4 million with incentives. Beyond his on-field capabilities, Joseph is expected to play a crucial mentoring role for the Cowboys’ 2023 first-round pick, defensive tackle Mazi Smith.
Joseph’s seasoned insights and extensive experience will provide invaluable guidance to Smith, ensuring that the young defensive tackle develops effectively within the professional ranks.
Revamping the Run Defense
The Cowboys' defense allowed an average of 112.4 rushing yards per game last season, ranking 16th in the NFL. With the infusion of new talent and the veteran presence of Joseph, the unit is anticipated to improve its performance against the run.
As the Cowboys prepare for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on how these strategic moves translate onto the field. The combination of fresh faces and experienced leaders sets a foundation for potentially significant defensive improvements. The team’s ability to seamlessly integrate these new players and capitalize on their skills will be pivotal to their success moving forward.
