Denver Nuggets Revamp Roster with Vet Star Russell Westbrook

The Denver Nuggets are undergoing considerable changes as they aim to strike a balance between experienced veterans and fresh, youthful energy. This transformation was epitomized by the significant alteration of their roster during the 2023 offseason, most notably with the acquisition of 35-year-old former MVP, Russell Westbrook.

With Westbrook joining the Nuggets, it's clear that the front office has opted to depart from the familiarity of last season's squad, bringing in the seasoned guard after his tenure with the LA Clippers. During his time with the Clippers, Westbrook averaged 11 points, five rebounds, and 4.5 assists in just over 22 minutes per game. He recorded shooting splits of 45% from the field, a modest 27% from three-point range, and 69% from the free-throw line.

Now entering his 17th year in the NBA, Westbrook is expected to bring invaluable experience both on and off the court. Nuggets' head coach Michael Malone expressed profound excitement about the addition of Westbrook to the team. "Russ is a game-changer. You just love the energy, the voice. You can hear Russ coming," Malone said, emphasizing Westbrook's dynamic presence.

The veteran point guard is set to back up the 27-year-old Jamal Murray, providing veteran leadership and depth to the Nuggets’ lineup. Despite some struggles last season, with Westbrook performing in the 24th percentile in shots at the rim and showing a 37% success rate from mid-range, his ability to excel in cuts, ranking in the 64th percentile, remains a key component of his gameplay.

Malone further lauded Westbrook's work ethic and the intangibles he brings to the team. "First guy in the gym -- he was here working out at 8 a.m. today. For a 17-year vet that's accomplished everything he's accomplished, I just love the intangibles that he brings to us. I think that's gonna raise the bar. We're gonna be a more competitive team because of that. He's gonna push guys, he's gonna challenge guys, and challenge me. And I think we're all excited for that," Malone added.

The high intensity and competitiveness that Westbrook is notorious for have not gone unnoticed by his new teammates. DeAndre Jordan, a key figure on the Nuggets’ roster, highlighted Westbrook’s unique influence. "Russ brings a different culture and a different mindset to a team -- a different energy," said Jordan. "I think that he's gonna be that burst of energy that we need on both sides of the floor."

Westbrook himself remains unapologetically committed to his style of play. "I think that people confuse intensity with competitiveness," he remarked. "When I compete, when I'm on the floor, I don't want to be walking around shaking hands, kissing babies -- I don't really want to do that. I'm there to -- excuse my language, but, kick some ass." His dedication and passion remain undeterred, as he continues to aim for peak performance. "When I am competing, I want to compete at the highest level, and that part of me will never change as long as I'm competing in this game. And I'm grateful for the opportunity," Westbrook shared.

For the Denver Nuggets, bringing in a player of Westbrook’s calibre signifies more than just an on-court upgrade. It’s an investment in a competitive culture shift — one that blends his ferocious competitiveness with the talents of the younger squad members. With the collective goal of pushing themselves to new heights, the Nuggets hope to make a resounding statement in the upcoming season.
