Walker Buehler Returns to the Injured List

Walker Buehler Returns to the Injured List

Walker Buehler, one of the cornerstones of the Dodgers' rotation, is headed to the injured list again due to right hip inflammation. This unfortunate event adds another chapter to Buehler's challenging journey back to form after missing most of the 2022 season and all of 2023 due to a second Tommy John surgery. He has struggled to regain his dominance from 2018 to 2021, a period during which he won 39 games and maintained an ERA below 3.44.

2024 Struggles After Comeback

Since his return on May 8, 2024, Buehler has had a rough time on the mound, tallying a 1-4 record with a 5.84 ERA over eight starts. His latest performance in Colorado encapsulated these struggles. Despite taking a line drive off the hip, Buehler stayed in the game but ultimately surrendered seven runs on seven hits, including two home runs. Manager Dave Roberts revealed that Buehler's hip had been sore for several starts. "I think [he's] a little bit sort of finding himself again. I think he's still in search mode. So, as he's getting back to health, I think for the mind and some clarity, I think this will be a good thing," said Roberts. He hopes that time on the injured list will allow Buehler to regroup both physically and mentally.

Bobby Miller Activated

As a corresponding move, the Dodgers have activated Bobby Miller, who has not pitched since April 10 due to right shoulder inflammation. Now in his second major league season, Miller has shown promise. He posted a 1-1 record with a 5.40 ERA in three starts this year, following an impressive rookie season in 2023. His return is timely for a Dodgers pitching staff affected by injuries, and it adds much-needed depth.

Looking Forward

Despite his recent struggles, Walker Buehler's career statistics remain impressive. Over seven seasons, he boasts a 47-20 record with a 3.17 ERA. The Dodgers are hopeful that rest will help Buehler return to his top form. His resilience and dedication to the team suggest a positive outlook for the future. As Buehler himself put it, "It sucks to feel kind of invaluable, or like you're hampering your team. At the end of the day, we really like our team and want to be ready for the end of the year. And I'm going to do whatever I need to do to feel like I can help our team at the end of the year, and do everything in my power to be valuable enough to be on those rosters."

Injuries are inevitable in Major League Baseball, but the Dodgers have demonstrated depth and flexibility in handling such setbacks. Bobby Miller stepping up helps cover the loss of Buehler, providing a silver lining in an otherwise challenging situation. All eyes will be on Buehler's recovery and return, with fans and teammates alike eager to see him regain his stellar form.
